Experiences and Human Agency: Conclusions

After my experiences at Vancouver Farmers’ Market, community gardens, and learning about zero waste, I conclude that people who participate in alternative food networks have agency and control over their choices. It is those intrinsic motivations that kick-start various movements. I would also like to argue that local actors who are part of AFNs are apparatuses. To my knowledge, although they are not deliberately imposing their ideals onto people, they are very influential on lifestyle choices. Strategies they use to share their ideals are through hosting local events. On the tactics end, people may poach from the apparatuses by using some of their ideas. Using zero waste as an example, someone may want to try it out but by easing in to it. He/ she may poach from the apparatus by using a jar to buy bulk items at the local grocery store.

Overall, I enjoyed this project greatly and would like to thank Dr. Justin Tse for his guidance, Erin Ireland and The Juice Truck for starting Mindful Movie Nights, and Brianne and Alison of Zero Waste Market Vancouver for sharing their knowledge.
